Back to School Tips

Summer is over, and school is back in session! As parents, we want to ensure our child is ready and prepared to learn all the exciting new experiences. Our children’s success depends on their hard work and our parenting skills. Stay involved this school year, and model what and how you want your child’s behavior to be. Communicate what your expectations are for the school year!

Here are a few tips that can help you as a parent and help make his school year the best year ever for you, your child, and their teacher:

  1. Make sure your child gets enough rest and sleep. Sleeping enough increases concentration, learning skills, and problem-solving. For teens, it can also help reduce pimples and facial blemishes.

  2. Meet and greet your child’s teacher. Communication is one key to a successful school year. Don’t wait until a problem occurs.

  3. Could you talk to your child about their day? This will allow your child to feel that what they are experiencing is important to you. Ask open-ended questions like, "Tell me about the best part of your day or Tell me what the worst part of your day was."

  4. Don’t talk negatively about your child’s teacher or the school in front of the student. This can tarnish the student's image of the school, reinforce negative behavior, and decrease their motivation to do well.

  5. Get into a routine of checking your child’s homework every night. As a parent, you must be accountable and ensure your child stays on task and completes all assignments.

  6. Please ensure your child has breakfast at home or school every morning.

  7. Be sure to celebrate positive achievements, even the small ones. This will motivate your students to do their best even in classes they are not particularly fond of.

  8. Please remember to talk about safety issues with your child, whether riding the bus, walking, or riding a bike; set boundaries and rules for safety.

  9. Finally, if you haven’t updated your child’s photo, this would be a perfect time in case of an unforeseen emergency
